The 38th sailing of the Millimeter National Championship
The 38th Millimeter Nationals were sailed in almost perfect weather with a flood tide and very little boat traffic. The composition of the regatta is 10 races, but once five races are completed each person’s worst race is deducted from the scoring. After 8 races there is another throw out. As the races are sailed, it can be difficult to keep score.
This regatta was very close in different groups, and the top group was the first and second places. Randy Smith was almost perfect on day one with a throw out. He won three races and had two seconds. Chris Davis at the end of day one had 11 points. Day two, 4 races to be sailed, Chris won three races and placed fifth with the throw out to win the regatta by one point over Randy. Liam O'Flaherty sailed his best Nationals, having the best fleet score for the final four races, taking third place over Steve McCarthy and Pax Davis.
After the fifth race, the fleet is split in half and the bottom half makes up the Silver Fleet. Bob Scholl won the Silver Fleet with JP Sirey second in this group.
Aaron Lee, last year’s winner, was not able to participate, but did a great job conducting the organization of the event. We want to thank John Hansen for being the race committee.
Many thanks to the Encinal Yacht Club for the use of their facilities. At least half the fleet were members of the club.
