The 40th sailing of the Millimeter National Championship
After a bit of confusion at the start, race 1 was won handily by Chris Davis, followed by Randy Smith and Radar Felton. Unfortunately, the auto-start box decided to take the day off in the sequence for race 2 but our valiant PRO located an air horn to continue with racing.
Races 2 and 3 were won by Smith. Aaron Lee got a fortunate pass on to take race 4 and Smith returned to his winning ways for races 5 and 6.
At the end of the day, with one throwout, Randy had 6 points, followed by Lee with 12, Felton with 13, and Davis with 14.
On day 2, the conditions were very similar, but with a bit more west in the breeze. The RC wisely set a short and long windward mark on the West side of the estuary and used both throughout the day. In race 7, Felton port-tacked the start, crossed the fleet, and won handily, followed by Davis and Smith. Smith won race 8 to lock up the series. The short weather mark was used for races 9 and 10 and Lee finally found some magic and took both.
Congratulations to Randy Smith on his 8th Millimeter Nationals win. Aaron Lee finished 2nd, and Radar Felton 3rd. In the Silver Fleet, Paul Turner was victorious followed by Liam O’Flaherty.
Thank you to PRO Vince Casalaina for running the races, Commodore Chris Davis for all of the backend organization and communication, Aaron Lee for race documents and prizes, and to all of the sailors who participated! It was a great event and let’s get more folks out next year!
Many thanks to the Encinal Yacht Club for the use of their facilities.
